Aunt Penny

August 31, 2008 at 6:08 pm (family, friends) (, )

Penny is not my real aunt, but I want my kids to know that she’s as much family to me as anyone else. Just saying that she’s a friend of the family doesn’t cut it. My Dad met Penny when I was a kid. I think through playing racquetball, but now that I think about it I don’t know exactly how they met. They are like siblings in how competitive they are. It’s a blast to watch them play racquetball or pool.

I didn’t get to meet Penny until 1999 or 2000. I was on a business trip to Cleveland OH where she was living at the time. Dad set it up for us to have dinner, and I’m so glad he did! I was a little nervous at first since I hadn’t ever met her and thought it was going to be an awkward meeting, but it wasn’t. We hit it off immediately and talked for hours. It was great!! We only get to see her once a year or so since she lives in Arkansas, but it’s always an awesome time when we do! I can’t wait to see her again!

Work out diary & Racquetball

August 31, 2008 at 5:24 pm (church, family, food, friends, kids, relationships, work out) (, , , , , )

Friday night I was able to get back on the elliptical for 30 minutes. Considering we had eaten dinner at Carrabba’s, I needed every minute of it! We did walk around the mall after dinner, but I don’t know that I burned many calories.

Saturday morning I tried something new. Racquetball. Sports isn’t something I’ve ever really been interested in, but I thought, why not give it a try? My Dad loves it, my husband likes it, Aunt Penny loves it, so there must be something to it. I went to the civic center where my Dad, his friend Chet, and Aunt Penny were playing. (A little side note here, the last time my Dad played Racquetball with Chet, he had a heart attack. He won 2 out of three games, but then he had a heart attack. Admittedly part of me wanted to be there for his first game after being cleared by the doctors, especially since he was playing Chet, but I was also there to learn.)

After their game was over, Penny was nice enough to teach me what she could in 15 or 20 minutes. Why not longer? Because I’m a wuss and despite time on the elliptical am still grossly out of shape. I was actually surprised at myself, I could hit the ball every now and then. Normally I don’t have any hand / eye coordination and I throw a ball worse than a girl. So I was extremely happy to see I could hit the ball. And it was fun!!

Watching them play, I couldn’t really understand why they were soaked with sweat. It’s not a huge court, it’s not as if they are running around like when people play tennis. BUT, within a few minutes I was sweating. After I went after the ball once I thought I had pulled a muscle in my leg. After I went for the ball a second time I thought I had twisted my knee. Fortunately I hadn’t, my body just isn’t use to moving that way. After that 15 or 20 minutes I was hooked. I still have so much to learn, but I’m looking forward to it!!

Even more surprising, when I was telling Zale about it in the car on the way to church, Anthony and Paige were listening and even expressed some interest in playing. How cool is that???!!!

Needless to say I didn’t get on the elliptical Saturday. That short bit of time “playing” (I use that term very loosely) racquetball yesterday morning was enough of a work out for one day! :) I wasn’t expecting to be sore last night, but I was, a little this morning too.

Today, Sunday, started out as a lazy day. Zale was wonderful and watched the kids while I went back to bed and slept until 11:00. Yea me! It felt so good!!! Up until almost 3:00 was spent cleaning off the DVR, relaxing and playing with the girls. Around 2:30 I started to feel a little guilty about doing nothing, so at 3:00 I went up and got on the elliptical for 35 minutes (without stopping). My feet were killing me with that weird tingling thing, but I made it. I even tried thinner socks, but that didn’t help. Oh well, I’m just thrilled that my endurance is building! I hope to have many more days of working out and learning racquetball! If I could just get rid of my sweet tooth!

Reagan’s birthday cake

August 29, 2008 at 1:07 pm (food, friends, kids) (, , , )

We didn’t quite go all out for Reagan’s cake this year like we did Hannah’s Dora cake. I figured she’s not going to remember anyway. I couldn’t really find a cake specific for a 1st birthday without going to a real bakery, instead of one in a grocery store. Since I completely lost track of time this year and forgot to order a cake until 3 or 4 days before the party, I settled for this one. The head of the caterpillar is a rattle, and she does like Baby Einstein and Little Einstein.

The cutest thing was a little cupcake they threw in with the cake that Reagan could devour all by herself. And devour she did. I wasn’t sure if she would eat it or not. But within seconds she had blue icing up her nose and within minutes there were only crumbs left of the cupcake. A big thanks to Nichole (our neighbor) who graciously took our camera and got all kinds of pictures for us!! They all turned out great!

The cake was good too. Sometimes a store bought cake looks better than it tastes, but this one was pretty good. Chocolate, of course. :) I bought it from a local family owned grocery store. The customer service was great and the cake was even ready hours early!

Why can’t things just stay clean?

August 29, 2008 at 12:48 pm (family, kids, misc) (, , , )

I was skimming over my previous posts and saw the one titled cleaning, cleaning, and more cleaning.  I realized that I wrote that just a week or so ago. Guess what?! My house is dirty again. And I don’t mean a little clutter here and there, I mean dirty. It’s almost like the kids and pets are on a mission to destroy it all.

I’ve determined that boys are just gross, and they are okay with it. Remember how I cleaned Anthony’s room and even did all his laundry? Can’t even tell it happened anymore. Don’t even get me started on his bathroom. Yuck. Don’t get me wrong, I love him no matter what, but I’m going to remember this and laugh when he’s complaining about his kids always having a trashed room! (Just as I’m sure my parents are laughing at me!)

The girls just leave a trail of toys wherever they go (when they’re not playing in pee, so maybe they’re gross too….).  :) Better stop blogging and go clean AGAIN. :) Ah, the joys of running a household, I have to admit, I do enjoy it! Maybe not the cleaning, but everything else is okay. And I don’t always mind the cleaning, it’s when I’ve spent so much time cleaning and look up to see they’ve not wasted anytime in dirtying it up again!

work out diary, Thursday

August 29, 2008 at 12:29 am (family, friends, kids, work out) (, , , , , )

I made it back upstairs tonight for some me time. :) I was able to do 30 minutes non stop on the elliptical. I wanted to do 40, but once again my feet were getting weird on me. Maybe if I wear thinner socks or get different shoes….I don’t know. If anyone else has had this problem and has any suggestions I’d love to hear them!

Saturday morning I MAY try to learn how to play racquetball. My Dad was cleared this morning to resume all normal physical activities (Praise God!) and he’s not going to waste any time! I don’t have very much, okay, I don’t have any, hand/eye coordination, so I’m not sure that racquetball is something I’ll ever be good at. But, Dad likes it, Zale likes it, and Penny (our very good friend who’s driving up from Arkansas this weekend, yea!) likes it. Maybe we can turn this into a family thing! Hannah would look very cute chasing a little ball around a court!

They just don’t make things the way they use to….

August 28, 2008 at 2:55 pm (misc) (, , )

You may be asking yourself, why am I looking at a picture of two vacuum cleaners? The one on the left, the really old one (I don’t even know how old it is, 20 years, maybe more) actually works better than the one on the right, which is about 4 1/2 years old. I know this because Zale and I bought it a few months after we moved into our house.

The older one use to be kept upstairs (since I’m pretty lazy and didn’t want to lug a vacuum cleaner upstairs every time the bonus room needed to be vacuumed) and the newer one lived downstairs. This was when I thought it was the better of the two. What I discovered though, was that the newer one no longer picks up cat hair, while the older one yanks it up like it was never there. Here’s the problem, the older one doesn’t have attachments. I need the attachments. So now, we keep both downstairs, and the newer one is only used when I need the attachments.

What really aggravates me about this whole thing is that we did some research before buying the new one and it was actually recommended in Consumer Reports. Even after replacing the filter and belts on the newer one, the older vacuum still does a better job. There’s just something wrong with that!

Picture day

August 28, 2008 at 2:39 pm (family, kids, misc) (, , )

I mentioned before that yesterday my Mother in law (also known as Gran Gran) and I took the girls to have their pictures made. (Aunt Angela was there too and helped Gran Gran pick out the best pictures.) This picture day was a little special because Hannah had her picture taken wearing two dresses that Gran Gran wore when she was a little girl. These dresses are completely hand made by Mama Lena, who was my Mother in law’s Grandmother. So Hannah and Reagan’s great-great Grandmother. The detail on these dresses is amazing. I couldn’t get the best pictures because the kids kept grabbing at them and we were trying to leave to make our appointment. But this should give you some idea. Even the hangers are antique.

I wish I had thought to take a picture of the back of the dresses, the ruffles are so beautiful. The dresses even have slips with the ruffled underskirts that could be dresses themselves. I can’t even imagine how many hours Mama Lena spent making them. Hannah looked so beautiful. We’ll do it again in a couple of years when Reagan is big enough to wear them.

3 Trees

August 28, 2008 at 2:21 pm (encouragement, inspiration, relationships) (, , , , )

I don’t know who originally wrote this, but my neighbor e mailed it to me (Thank you Nichole!) and I had to share it. Great story!!!

3 Trees

Once there were three trees on a hill in the woods. They were discussing their hopes and dreams when the first tree said, ‘Someday I hope to be a treasure chest. I could be filled with gold, silver and precious gems. I could be decorated with intricate carving and everyone would see the beauty.’

Then the second tree said, ‘Someday I will be a mighty ship. I will take Kings and Queens across the waters and sail to the corners of the world. Everyone will feel safe in me because of the strength of my hull.

Finally the third tree said, ‘I want to grow to be the tallest and straightest tree in the forest. People will see me on top of the hill and look up to my branches, and think of the heavens and God and how close to them I am reaching. I will be the greatest tree of all time and people will always remember me .’

After a few years of praying that their dreams would come true, a group of woodsmen came upon the trees. When one came to the first tree he said, ‘This looks like a strong tree, I think I should be able to sell the wood to a Carpenter, ‘and he began cutting it down. The tree was happy, because he knew that the carpenter would make him into a treasure chest.

At the second tree the woodsman said, ‘This looks like a strong tree. I should be able to sell it to the shipyard.’ The second tree was happy because he knew he was on his way to becoming a mighty ship.

When the woodsmen came upon the third tree, the tree was frightened because he knew that if they cut him down his dreams would not come true. One of the woodsmen said, ‘I don’t need anything special from my tree, I’ll take this one,’ and he cut it down.

When the first tree arrived at the carpenters, he was made into a feed box for animals. He was then placed in a barn and filled with hay. This was n ot at all what he had prayed for.

The second tree was cut and made into a small fish-ing boat. His dreams of being a mighty ship and carrying kings had come to an end.

The third tree was cut into large pieces, and left alone in the dark.

The years went by, and the trees forgot about their dreams.

Then one day, a man and woman came to the barn. She gave birth and they placed the baby in the hay in the feed box that was made from the first tree. The man wished that he could have made a crib for the baby, but this manger would have to do. The tree could feel the importance of this event and knew that it had held the greatest treasure of all time.

Years later, a group of men got in the fishing boat made from the second tree. One of them was tired and went to sleep. While they were out on the water, a great storm arose and the tree didn’t think it was strong enough to keep the men safe. The men woke the sleeping man, and He stood and Said ‘Peace’ and t he storm stopped. At this time, the tree knew that it had carried the King of Kings in its boat.

Finally, someone came and got the third tree. It was carried through the streets as the people mocked the man who was carrying it. When they came to a stop, the man was nailed to the tree and raised in the air to die at the top of a hill. When Sunday came, the tree came to realize that it was strong enough to stand at the top of the hill and be as close to God as was possible, because Jesus had been crucified on it.

The moral of this story is that when things don’t seem to be going your way, always know that God has a plan for you. If you place your trust in Him, God will give you great gifts.

Each of the trees got what they wanted, just not in the way they had imagined.

We don’t always know what God’s plans are for us. We just know that His Ways are not our ways, but His ways are always best.

May your day be blessed. And until we meet again, may God cradle you in the palm of His hand.

‘Sorrow looks back… Worry looks around… Faith looks up…’

I think that last sentence is my favorite, and so true! Sorrow, guilt, regret, worry, none of that does us any good. Faith, on the other hand, is the key to living our lives to the fullest! God is Good!!!

work out diary, Tue & Wed

August 28, 2008 at 12:03 pm (TV, family, friends, kids, work out) (, , , , , )

I’ve been a bit cranky (and exhausted) lately, sorry family, and just couldn’t quite figure out why. It finally dawned on me Tuesday afternoon that I haven’t really been able to exercise lately (and haven’t been sleeping very well). I may get to take a walk every once in awhile, but that’s not the same as a good work out. So I told Zale that I think I really need to go back to having an hour or so alone to work out every night. Every night probably isn’t realistic, but I’d settle for most nights. I’m hoping it will help me feel better over all. I think part of the problem is my thyroid meds needing another adjustment, but this should help too.

So Tuesday night I made it 40 minutes on the elliptical with only a 20 second (or so) rest for my feet and to change the episode on the DVD player. The remote for the DVD doesn’t work unless you’re right in front of it. I’ve still got the tingly thing going on with my feet after 18 minutes or so on the elliptical/torture machine that I wish I knew how to fix. I don’t know if it’s bad circulation or what, but within seconds of walking normally it goes away. The work out felt great though! I even took a little hand held vacuum cleaner and vacuumed part of the upstairs and the steps. (The cats had made it obvious they had been hanging out there.)

Yesterday I got in a few work outs. First, my mother in law wanted to take the girls to have their pictures made. With a couple of different outfits. So by the time we changed their clothes and I chased Reagan down countless times to get the shots, I was worn out and had broken a sweat.

After dinner I was feeling really restless. The kids had been very clingy all day and I really needed a brake. So I put Reagan down for a late nap (which I paid for later since she wouldn’t go to sleep until after 11 last night) and took our dog (Gracie) for a walk around the neighborhood. I made the mistake of wearing my slip on tennis shoes and only made it around the block once. Oh well, it was still nice to get out and I know Gracie enjoyed it.

The third work out was after we took Anthony’s girlfriend home. I went upstairs to hit the elliptical/torture machine again. This time I made it a little over 25 minutes without stopping. My feet were a combination of numb, tingly, and on fire (weird, I know), but I endured and finished up the episode of Boston Legal I had started the night before. I’m hoping to get back up there tonight and make it at least 40 minutes again. We’ll see how it goes.

I did get to take a walk around the neighborhood one night last week with the girls and our good friend’s kids, Logan and Kianna. That was a fun walk. Logan and Kianna are great to talk to and Kianna is so good with the girls! We played UNO before our walk, they enjoyed beating me and giving me all those draw 4 cards a little too much, but that’s okay, it was still a lot of fun! I hope they’ll come over again soon…hint, hint, Jason! :)

My Ex

August 26, 2008 at 8:19 pm (family, kids, law, misc, relationships) (, , , , )

Today was an interesting day. I haven’t spoken or had any communication with my ex husband in at least four years, maybe five. I’ve even said before that the only way I knew he was alive was because we kept getting child support (automatically deducted from his paycheck and sent through the State). But a few weeks ago that stopped.

I thought about not doing anything, but not knowing what’s going on tends to drive me a little crazy. So I called his employer and found out they were going out of business and everyone got laid off. I hate that for everyone involved. I still wasn’t sure what to do about the child support situation. Zale and I prayed about it, and we’re still praying about it.

I won’t go into all the details, but I did end up finding my ex through his sister. I don’t think I’ve talked with her in about 10 years. I wasn’t sure if she was going to cuss me out or be glad that I called. It seemed as though she didn’t mind hearing from me. Even gave me an update on a couple of members of their family. Many years ago she and I were really good friends, it’s a shame that relationships can be so damaged that friendships are lost.

Anyway, I did talk to my ex, I can’t say that things went as well as I hoped, but they didn’t go as badly as they could have either. I really don’t know what will happen from here. Admittedly I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. I think God is going to have to take over on this one. My prayer is for the best possible outcome. That Anthony and his father can eventually repair their relationship. That his father will come to know Christ in a way that transforms his life.

I don’t know if my ex and I will ever be friends as my parents have become, but with God, all things are possible.
